Think Like Your Customer

Think like your customer.  It’s every marketer’s mantra.  Seems simple enough, right?

What is a marketer?

According to BusinessDictionary.com, a marketer is a person whose duties include the identification of the goods and services desired by a set of consumers, as well as the marketing of those goods and services on behalf of a company.

As marketers, thinking like our customers is difficult.  We often make assumptions about them based on our own behavior.  Such assumptions could be bad for business.

Here are some tips to effectively “think like your customer”:

Who are your customers?

Do some research and interact with your customers!  Knowing the answers to these questions would help you gain insight: Who are your ideal customers?  Where are they? Which social networks do they use and where do they search for information?

Think Ahead

Once you know who your customers are, it’ll be easier to anticipate what they need.   Put yourself in their shoes.   What would they need or want?  Offer what they need even before they know they need it.

Social Media

Why would a marketer care about social media?  Well, potential customers are all over the web: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.  Focus your efforts on specific sites that cater to your target customers.  Determine what your customer needs and show proof (testimonials, data, or demonstrations) that your product is what they need.  If you were the customer, wouldn’t you want the same thing?
